Girls on the Run

For a second year Kathy Monteiro a Resident in Memorial Northwest is heading a group called Girls on the Run.  Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-5th grade. They teach life skills through dynamic interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the young ladies being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.  Girls on the Run Greater Houston for spring 2016 Season starts the week of February 22 and concludes on Race Day on May 21st at The University of Houston.

Each team is headed by two volunteers and consist of 15 young ladies.  This year Coaching along side Kathy is another resident Tracy Huebel. They have 2 subcoaches Erin Kohlweck who is a Memorial Northwest resident and Sasha Brown who is a teacher at Theiss Elementary. If you have a young lady in your family that is in 3rd-5th grade and is interested you may contact Kathy at  She does not plan on coaching in the fall however she plans on coaching again next spring.

There is also a curriculum for 6th-8th grade called Heart and Soul.  There are no known groups in the area right now. If you are interested in coaching or heading a group in the fall or next spring go to their website for more information.

We are Proud and Thankful for our residents Kathy Monterio, Tracey Huebel, Erin Kohlweck, and Sasha Brown for volunteering their time to put together such a wonderful group in our neighborhood.  We hope more families will volunteer to help keep this group going and alive for years to come.
