I am Candice Cowin, the editor of our community newsletter, the MNW Messenger. I’ve noticed a recent uptick in the amount of submissions and suggestions for content in our newsletter, which I ❤️ LOVE.
Here’s the deal though: THE SIZE OF OUR NEWSLETTER IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE AMOUNT OF ADVERTISING SOLD FOR IT EACH MONTH.
I would love to be able to include more neighborhood content and photos, but in order to get more pages in our newsletter, we need more neighbors to buy advertising in our publication.
The more ads we have, the more space I will have for the news that you want to see. We are currently limited to about 20 pages, roughly half of which needs to be filled by ads to make it viable. That doesn’t leave us with much space for neighborhood news, although I try to include all that I can each month.
THE DESIGN, PRINTING AND DISTRIBUTION OF OUR NEWSLETTER IS PAID FOR ENTIRELY BY THE ADS SOLD FOR IT. THE NEWSLETTER IS NOT FUNDED IN ANY WAY BY YOUR HOA FEES.
Advertising in our community newsletter is the best way to mine your own neighborhood for the customers and services you need. It doesn’t get any better than neighbors helping neighbors. I know we have a wealth of business owners in MNW and the surrounding areas who could benefit from a bit of affordable advertising.

In the “Memorial Northwest Messenger” you invited suggestions to make MNW a better place in which to live. As I walk the streets of the neighborhood, I see curbs that are badly broken, storm sewer drains that are badly in need of repair, stop signs that are so old and faded out–and some defaced or broken. I have even seen a storm sewer drain cover that was not covering the hole and a child or pet could easily fall into. There are places in the streets which have subsided, and water collects and stands for days. The street needs to be raised–and Harris County provides this service. These are examples of the types of services requests that Harris County (now Precinct 3) fix. I have made several service requests (heretofore to Pct. 4) and they accept the work order and in a matter of time they send a crew and fix the problem. If it is a safety or emergency issue, they have a crew come out quickly. I am sure that many people in MNW are unaware of the services that the county can provide for the benefit of the MNW neighborhood. I suggest that an article be placed in the “Messenger” alerting them to the things Harris County can do for us—and they can take it upon themselves to go online and make a service request at http://www.hcp3.net/Assistance/CAD/WORF. It is so simple. In fact, I might even suggest it be a standing segment of each “Messenger”. People should have a constant reminder of whom to contact and the types of services that are available to us as a result of the taxes we pay.
